British Foreign Office diplomat who provided most valuable Cambridge Five intelligence to Soviets. Senior diplomatic position granted access to classified information exceeding other ring members. Recruited at Cambridge (early 1930s) with Guy Burgess, both ideologically anti-capitalist. Soviets received 4,593 documents from Maclean (1941-1945). Exposed Manhattan Project secrets to USSR. Defected with Burgess (May 1951) when exposure imminent. Lived in Moscow until death (1983). His position in Foreign Office made him most strategically valuable Cambridge spy despite less fame than Philby. Joint defection with Burgess publicly revealed spy ring's existence.
