British diplomat and Cambridge Five leader who 'held group together, infused it with energy.' Recruited by Soviet intelligence at Cambridge (early 1930s) alongside Donald Maclean. Soviets received 4,605 documents from Burgess (1941-1945). Defected with Maclean to USSR (May 1951) via French port under darkness, traveling through Europe to Soviet embassy in Berne for false passports. Spirited to Moscow where he lived until death (1963). Ideologically opposed to capitalism. Considered ring's organizational force and most energetic member. Disappearance with Maclean exposed Cambridge spy network, shocking British establishment.
